For: equipment buyers, dealers and specification teams
The decision: Does the supplied evidence cover the actual product and intended installation?
60-second answer: Match the exact model and configuration to the claimed standard, test report or certification record. A logo alone does not establish coverage, and a recall does not by itself prove that certification was absent or invalid.
Separate three different documents
A standard describes requirements within a defined scope. A test report records an assessment of identified samples against stated requirements. A certification record describes the certified product and the certifier’s scope. These documents answer different questions; ask the supplier to identify which claim it is making.
OSHA’s NRTL program recognizes laboratories for specified product-safety standards, and authorized marks indicate certification under that program. European CE marking follows the applicable EU conformity rules; it is not a universal third-party test certificate or an automatic substitute for U.S. requirements. Determine the requirements for the product, market and installation with the appropriate specialists.
| Field | Evidence to request | Stop-and-clarify signal |
|---|---|---|
| Product identity | Model, revision, rated supply and relevant options | Quote and certificate describe different configurations |
| Claimed standard | Designation, edition and scope | General compliant language without a named requirement |
| Evidence type | Declaration, report or listing and issuing organization | Marketing badge offered as the entire file |
| Verification | Certifier’s public record or direct confirmation where applicable | Record cannot be matched to the offered product |
| Installation conditions | Manual and listing limitations | Accessories or site arrangement fall outside stated conditions |
A recall is a separate check
CPSC’s December 18, 2025 AMP MP2 recall describes an arm-locking hazard and a repair remedy. It is relevant safety information for the identified product. The notice does not establish that a purchaser’s certification paperwork caused the defect, and it should not be used to imply that an unrelated rack attachment has the same failure mode.
Check recall and safety-bulletin status separately from certification. A product with a certification record can still require corrective action. Retain the actual notice and obtain the prescribed remedy evidence for an affected unit; a certificate should never close that case.
Make the quote file usable at receiving
Pull the proposed bill of materials, specification revisions, label photographs, supplier evidence and site requirements. Record who reviewed each exception and the supplier’s response. At receiving, match the delivered model and options to the approved file before accepting an unexplained substitution.
- Who issued the evidence, and can it be verified independently?
- Does it cover the exact model, accessories and electrical configuration being supplied?
- Which installation or use conditions affect the claim?
- What written approval is required if the product changes after quotation?
Avoid declaring that every commercial fitness product must carry the same mark or use a single ASTM edition. Scope matters. If a public abstract does not answer the question, obtain the relevant standard or qualified interpretation rather than filling in requirements from a similar machine.

Before the purchase order is released
- Complete one verification sheet per materially different product configuration.
- Resolve mismatched identifiers and unsupported claims with the supplier.
- Give receiving and installation teams the approved specification and exception file.
