Gym electrical capacity is a threshold problem with a small number of hard numbers. Treadmills set the ceiling. Everything else negotiates around them.
Gym Electrical Capacity Is Decided Before the Equipment List Exists
On most fit-outs, the electrical drawing is issued while the equipment package is still a budget allowance. The panel schedule reflects an assumed count of cardio positions, not a purchase order. When the operator later swaps four ellipticals for four treadmills, the drawing does not change and nobody tells the electrician.
The swap looks free on the equipment quote. It is not free on the panel, because those two categories sit on opposite sides of the only threshold that matters.
The Treadmill Rule That Sets the Panel Count
Brigadoon Fitness publishes a facility power requirements sheet that states the rule plainly for its commercial treadmills: a 120V/20A circuit with a non-looped, isolated ground, dedicated only, using a NEMA 5-20P plug into a NEMA 5-20R receptacle, with maximum draw listed at 1,650 watts.
Dedicated only is the operative phrase, and it is the single largest driver of gym electrical capacity on a cardio floor. One treadmill, one circuit, one breaker position. A twelve-position row is twelve breaker positions before you have powered a light fixture.
The same rule appears outside manufacturer literature. In a ConnectFit article on the electrical needs in the gym, Norm Morrison writes that “all commercial treadmills require a 5-20 NEMA plug. Which is just a dedicated 20 amp circuit, really,” and calls the treadmill the power hog of the equipment world.
Everything Else Shares, and That Is the Trap
The Brigadoon sheet allows non-treadmill cardio to behave very differently. Ellipticals and recumbent and upright bikes run on a 120V/15A circuit, shared or dedicated, with up to four units permitted per 15-amp circuit and a maximum draw listed at 385 watts.
Four units on one circuit versus one unit on one circuit is a four-to-one difference in breaker positions for machines that occupy roughly the same floor area. That ratio is why gym electrical capacity fails quietly during category substitutions rather than during initial design.
An operator who trades eight bikes for eight treadmills adds six breaker positions to a panel nobody re-checked. That is a gym electrical capacity change disguised as a like-for-like unit swap.

Self-Powered Units Change the Arithmetic
The same manufacturer sheet lists self-powered models requiring no external power, with LED and LCD console variants shown with no power specification at all. On a constrained panel, that is a real lever.
Substituting self-powered bikes on a wall run frees 15-amp circuits that can be reallocated. It does not free 20-amp treadmill circuits, because those are dedicated by specification and cannot be borrowed from elsewhere.

Six to eight feet is a short leash. A receptacle placed for a drawing rather than for a machine puts the operator in the position of choosing between a warranty violation and moving the unit out of the intended position.

Five Steps to Size the Panel Before the Equipment Order Is Signed
- Convert the equipment list into breaker positions, not watts. Count dedicated treadmill circuits first, then divide powered non-treadmill cardio by four. The resulting number is what the panel has to answer.
- Reissue the count every time a category swaps. A like-for-like unit count is not a like-for-like electrical load. Any substitution that crosses the treadmill line triggers a fresh check.
- Mark receptacle positions against machine footprints. Lay the cardio row on the plan with a six-foot radius from each receptacle. Anything outside that radius is a relocation or a floor box.
- Ask the supplier for the power sheet in writing. Specifications differ by series and by console. A written sheet is the document your electrician can price from and the one that settles disputes later.
- Leave headroom for a category you have not bought yet. Morrison advises designing for ten to fifteen years of future power needs. Spare breaker positions cost far less at rough-in than after the floor is finished.
Where the Blame Lands When the Circuit Count Is Short
A gym electrical capacity shortfall surfaces on install day as a delivery that cannot be commissioned. The equipment is on site, the crew is on site, and two treadmill positions have nowhere to plug in.
