Most reporting on connected cardio equipment tells operators what happened without telling them what to do about it. A number on its own is a fact; a number with a band around it is a decision.

What follows is six connected cardio equipment metrics with explicit green, amber and red thresholds, plus the arithmetic that turns a console export into a reading you can act on the same week. Treat the bands as operating rules rather than industry law, and tighten them once your own floor has produced a baseline.
Set the bands before you look at the numbers
Agree the thresholds in advance and write them down. Bands set after the fact drift to accommodate whatever the report says, which is how connected cardio equipment ends up permanently amber and never escalated.
Green means leave it alone. Amber means schedule an intervention within the month. Red means act this week, and record what you did. Three tiers is enough; a fourth invites debate about which tier applies.
Metric one: belt and deck hours against the service interval
Almost every treadmill console in a connected cardio equipment fleet tracks accumulated running hours. Express them as a percentage of the manufacturer’s stated interval since the last service, because raw hours mean nothing without the interval beside them.
Green is under 70 percent of the interval consumed. Amber is 70 to 95, which is the window where a service should already be booked. Red is over 95 percent, where the unit is running on borrowed time and belt wear starts producing member complaints before it produces a fault code.

Metric two: error-code frequency per unit per month
Count distinct fault events per unit per month, not total codes, because one fault can produce a cascade of entries. Deduplicate anything logged inside the same fifteen-minute window.
Green is one event or fewer per unit per month. Amber is two to four, which usually indicates a component starting to fail rather than a random event. Red is five or more, and at that point the unit needs a diagnostic visit rather than another reset. A single unit generating a quarter of the floor’s total codes is the clearest replacement signal connected cardio equipment produces.
Metric three: console uptime during opening hours
Measure uptime against opening hours, not twenty-four-hour clock time, or the number flatters everything. If the club opens 100 hours a week and a console is unresponsive for two of them, that is 98 percent, not 99.
Green is 99 percent or better. Amber is 96 to 99, worth a firmware check and a look at the network drop. Red is below 96 percent, which members will already have mentioned. Count touch-response failures as downtime even where the machine still runs, because a member who cannot start a program has met a broken machine.
Metric four: early session abandonment
Count sessions that end within three minutes of starting, as a percentage of all sessions started on that unit. It is the most honest member-experience metric the equipment produces, because nobody abandons a machine they are happy with.
Green is under 5 percent of starts. Amber is 5 to 12, which usually points to a console fault, a stiff adjustment, a screen the member cannot navigate, or a machine positioned somewhere uncomfortable. Red is over 12 percent, and it almost always resolves to something physical rather than something digital.
Metric five: unit-level utilization spread
Take the busiest and quietest unit of the same type at peak and subtract one occupancy percentage from the other. Averages hide this entirely, which is why connected cardio equipment can report healthy utilization while three machines carry the load.
Green is a spread under 15 percentage points. Amber is 15 to 30, usually explained by position, screen generation or a known quirk. Red is over 30 points: members are actively avoiding specific units, and the reason is worth finding before the next purchase.
Connected cardio equipment downtime and repeat faults
Two related numbers close the set. Downtime hours per unit per quarter measures how long a machine was unavailable, counted from the moment it left service to the moment it returned. Repeat faults counts how often the same fault type recurred on the same unit within 90 days.
For downtime, green is under 8 hours a quarter, amber 8 to 24, red above 24. For repeat faults, green is none, amber is one recurrence, red is two or more. A unit that is red on both is making the repair-or-replace case for you, which is where the repair-or-replace decision stops being a judgment call.

Two worked readings from a generic floor
Take a row of twelve treadmills in a single-site club open 100 hours a week. Unit seven logs 41 unresponsive-console minutes in a month, which is 99.3 percent uptime: green. It also logs six distinct fault events and two recurrences of the same code inside 90 days, which is red twice over. Connected cardio equipment often reads healthy on the metric that is easiest to publish.
Now take the same row’s abandonment figures. Eleven units sit between 2 and 4 percent, while unit twelve reads 14 percent: red, and the spread points at the unit rather than the programming. The cause is usually mundane, such as a position in a draft, a screen at the wrong angle or a stiff incline motor. Members diagnose these long before a report does, which is why members bypass machines that work perfectly well.
The first 72 hours after a red reading
- Hour 0 to 4 — confirm the reading. Pull the raw export for that unit, deduplicate the fault window and check the asset tag matches the physical machine before anyone is dispatched.
- Hour 4 to 12 — walk to the machine. Ride it for five minutes at member settings. Half of red abandonment readings explain themselves in that session.
- Hour 12 to 24 — decide service or removal. If the unit is red on repeat faults as well, take it off the floor rather than leaving a known-bad machine in a row.
- Hour 24 to 48 — book and brief. Log the fault history with the service call, and tell the floor team what to say when members ask about the missing unit.
- Hour 48 to 72 — set the recheck. Schedule a 30-day re-read of the same metric, and record whether the reading returned to green or merely to amber.
Consistency matters more than sophistication. A club reading six connected cardio equipment metrics against fixed bands every month beats one reading twenty metrics irregularly, and the habit pairs naturally with a register that names who owns each dataset.

Which metric should we start with if we can only track one?

Usually it means uptime is being measured as time powered on rather than time responsive to a member. Check whether unresponsive screens, failed program starts and network drops are counted. If they are not, measure touch failures separately and treat them as downtime in your own reading.
How often should these numbers be reviewed?
Monthly for error codes, uptime, abandonment and belt hours; quarterly for downtime and utilization spread. Reviewing more often produces noise, since a single fault can move a small floor’s monthly numbers. Reviewing less often means a red reading sits unattended for a quarter.
Do these thresholds work for bikes and rowers too?
The bands transfer, but the wear metric changes. Substitute drive-belt or chain hours, resistance-unit hours or seat-rail service intervals for belt and deck hours, and keep the same 70 and 95 percent boundaries. Reading the floor by numbers
A cardio floor run against fixed bands behaves differently. Faults are caught while still amber, the same unit stops appearing in complaints, and replacement arguments arrive with a fault history rather than a hunch. Finance responds to that, which is why planned reinvestment, as set out in the Health & Fitness Association guidance on buying new equipment, beats reactive replacement.
